Artistic Statement
As a dance creator, my main focus is rooted in experiences. To me, being an artist is not simply about the work I create, but more about the audience--how I, we, engage the viewers and the experience that leaves with them. The development of my work starts with the dancers, particularly with personal truth as well as expression. Conceptually, I come from a place within my own reality and attempt to link that with ideas much larger and much deeper--work that tends to migrate into the human condition. Together, we explore boundaries, create connections, and cross over into the depth of their inner experience in an effort to draw out the most intimate and vulnerable part of themself; the spirit inside the mover.
Both through my personal lens and the dancers' lens, we navigate through fluidity and rigidity, pushing physical boundaries, entering and exiting the body and energy fields, wandering in and out of our consciousness and subconsciousness, all with emotional investment and with an understanding of cultural relevancy. The duality of life is the essence of what I do. In tapping into our human reality through dance, I hope to ultimately change the audience, stretch the limits of our minds, and touch not only our emotions, but our universal compassion for each other.
